Erythromycin Alcohol
Best Answers erythromycin and alcohol? I've been hearing mixed things about being able to drink alcohol while taking erythromycin for strep throat. Although my strep throat is gone completely, I still have another 2 days to go to finish my biotics. I take 4 of them a day, and there is a total of 28 pills. Is it a really bad idea to drink tonight?? Iron replied: "allergy pills and erythromycine should not be mixed together.
Best not to drink."
Brandy W replied: "do not mix them..... they both filter through your liver. It is never a good idea to mix any medication, even tylenol and aspirin with alcohol.
I say suck it up for two more day's until you are finished with your antibiotics." stopping erythromycin for a day to let u drink alcohol? i've been on 2 pills a day( one in morning, one at night) for 3-4weeks now for minor acne. Big party this saturday and wondering if its possible to stop the pills for a day or so? Would this damage my liver at all? Does drinking alcohol with Erethromycin damage the liver at all? It would obviously decrease the effectivness in the sense you are not taking the pill, but would it effect the overall performance of the drug in the long-term? Have tryed to avoid and serios alcohol consumtion in the past while on the pill... Suzy replied: "the medicine will still be in your system...and i dont see a problem with alcohol and erethromycin."
huggz replied: "Stick to soft drinks, breaking the course of antibiotics will not do you any favours, even for 1 day. What is more important...getting rid of the spots or drinking for 1 night...its your decision!"
Croa replied: "I'd stick to non-alcoholic drinks until I finished the round of medicine.
You can damage your liver (it's already working harder to process the meds) and also thwart the medicines' progress. Have no-alcohol beer, or virgin Margaritas, just this once.
Good Luck, and have fun!"
littleredridinghood49030 replied: "you can stop taking the pill if you want to which is dumb but the medicine will still be in youre system"
Leigh K replied: "No, No. NO. Do not do that. There is a reason that you can't take alcohol and the antibiotic together. If you stop the antibiotic, it allows the bacteria it is fighting to re-flourish, often with a new immunity to the antibac. Then if you resumed, they would not be effective any longer. It would basically be like not having taken the antibac at all. You should finish ANY course of antibiotics that you start or they are almost useless. Plus, antibacs kill off your digestive flora in your stomach, which control yeasts and sugars. Alcohol, especially beer, has both which could wind you up with a yeast infection. (and yes, both males and females can get yeast infections.) You need to just show some restraint and wait to party." What effect does Alcohol have on Erythromycin? I'm currently on erythromycin and my doctor has said I can have alcohol in moderation.
I don't intend to have it in excess, I'm just curious (and didn't think to ask the doctor at the time) - but is it because the effect of the alcohol is intensified by the antiobiotic (and therefore you put yourself at risk cos you're more bladdered than you'd normally be after the same amount), or simply becuase the alcohol stops the antibiotics from workign as well?
And also - does this only work if you've been on them for a while or does it have an equal effect if you've only taken, say, one tablet? rustybones replied: "It stops them from working as well and it doesn't matter whether it's one tablet or many."
rosieC replied: "Ethanol: Common Name: Alcohol
Clinical Name: Ethanol
Avoid ethanol or alcohol as it may decrease absorption of erythromycin or enhance ethanol effects.. Never begin taking a new medication, prescription or nonprescription, without asking your doctor or nurse if it will interact with alcohol, foods or other medications" aside from erythromycin and clindamycin, what other antibiotics could i use to cure my b.o.? i was advised by a dermatologist to use erythromycin ointment then clindamycin but it didn't cure my problem. i've tried natural remedies like lemon, baking soda, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, apple cider vinegar, etc. pls. help. you can take it or leave it.... replied: "Have you tried to use a Rx deoderant? They have this one stuff that you put on at night and it keeps you from sweating. I dunno if that is what is causing your b.o., if so you may want to try it. Or if you are a chick then get the Secret Clinical strength deoderant. I use it cause I sweat a lot and since I started using it I never oversweat." Can I use Erythromycin to clean my piercing? pls help? So my ears a bit sore wen i touch it. pierced it 3 days ago, using a fake earring, not silver. Ive been usin rubbing alcohol but my mom told me Erythromycin(popularly used for eyes) is great for anti-bacteria. Is it safe on ears too?? texandc2002 replied: "sure."
AJ replied: "Erythomycin is nothing more than an antibiotic similar to penicillin but with a slightly wider spectrum than that of penicillin. It is often given to people allergic to penicillin.
So Yes you can use but each time you use an antibiotic you make some infectious type germs resistant to the drugs. This is why we now have super drugs that are resistant to just about any antibiotic. It is called over use. If you do not have an infection then you should not use it. Also you body will eventually kill of many weaker infections on its own." does alcohol affect the effect of antibiotics? jus started taking erythromycin antibiotics (but dont want to stop drinking lol), I no that they increase the effect of alcohol, (which I dont mind because I get drunk for less), but does alcohol stop the tablets working???? mrstigerstripes replied: "yes i think it does, your gp should have told you when he gave them."
Mr Glenn replied: "Usually, alcohol stops the antibiotic from being as effective in what it is trying to do."
Sweetbaby replied: "YES"
Beth replied: "Yes, it weakens the power of the drug, but the drug does still have *some* power. Just don't over do it."
MS.KNOW IT ALL replied: "yes it does, thats why they tell you not to do it, also keep in mine it may also damage your organs by doing so...So in the long run is it worth it.."
Twelve Monkeys replied: "Never drink alcohol when taking tablets."
soobee replied: "Duh?"
lilahope2000 replied: "A good rule to follow: if you are on prescription drugs....do not drink alcohol!"
sasha replied: "yeah the drink will stop them from working
sorry : ("
iain replied: "It certainly does, so please quit the booze until you are
better."
bw_r005t3r replied: "I was on antibiotics and had 1 beer at the end of my course. The effect was that I was violently sick about 30 minutes after the drink. I kept chucking up for the rest of the evening and will NEVER drink while on antibiotics again.
There are lots of different types of antibiotics though, and maybe yours might not have the same effect. But don't say you weren't warned...."
Fencer replied: "yes, take care"
Michael D replied: "yes alcohol will take away from the antibiotics ---- stop drinking take your antibioics --- after 10 days from that you can start to drink again --- taking antibiotics and drinking will only build up a tollerence to the drug and make them not work which down the road if you need them again they won't do you any good --- don't make your body immune to something it needs to heal itself ---- suck it up until your off your medication --- don't waste your money or time"
Toffee replied: "when taking antibiotics most always have in the leaflet that comes with them not to drink when taking them as it stops them from working.
It should be noted that antibiotics may have a variety of side effects that might be made worse by alcohol, for example, sleepiness and dizziness. Alcohol is likely to worsen these effects. You should never drink alcohol and drive if you are affected.
You should always check with your doctor or pharmacist when you are given your prescription.

Smiley replied: "It will not get you drunk quicker it's an antibitic not a painkiller and yes drinking will slow down its healing affects. if you are ever put on an antibiotic beginning with the letter "F" (dentists are notorious for prescribing it for absesses) and you drink even a sip of alcohol you will be vomiting severely for several hours! Dont mess with stuff that is meant to heal you!"
christine h replied: "no it wont stop them from working but just take it easy ,its just a precaution from manufactures. But if they are only for 5 days stop anyway ,or start tablets after the weekend like I do ."
eeeeeeeeclipse replied: "Yes it true, alcohol lessons the effects of antibiotics"
shiraz_princess replied: "Ask a pharmacist, most people say that you can't drink when you are taking antibiotics, but if that were truly the case then they would label the pill bottle. They sure enough label it when you can't take it with milk or when you have to take it on a empty stomach or on a full stomach. They even label over the counter cold medicines and aspirin. If there was serious risk and the bottle wasn't labelled then they would be liable, not something the medical profession is apt to forget. Not getting better because the antibiotics are not working is a serious risk.

Butterfly - thinks Micheal might get pregnant>"
goin.back.2bed¦-} replied: "No, I don't believe the efficiency decreases as whenever I have had a chest/ear/eye infection (luckily not often) and need to take anti's, it still clears up!..as like you, one does like to have a lil sherbet when the sun goes down hehehe Just one of lives many pleasures;)"
Butterflys replied: "YES!!!! They won't take care of what you have, plus you also could get pregnant if your on birth control."
roberts051156 replied: "yes. not totaly but drinking alot srews up a lot of things in your body. dont get wasted everyday and they will work, will take longer, other side affects."
bortakmeki replied: "Antibiotics vary in there constitution, so this is not a hard fast answer for all of them. If you drink after taking antibiotics, the drug will attack the alcohol first, before the thing it is trying to cure, so yes they will work slower, or not at all in some cases. also, they can react with the alcohol and make behave like something out of the exorcist.
From experiance, and asking many doctors over the years off the record, the general opinion to be able to drink and take antibiotics, is leave it about 4 hours after taking the drugs before drinking, that way it gives it time for the antibiotic to get into the system and start working before you harass it with alcohol!"
womam12 replied: "jesus what planet are you on, you cant have the best of both worlds, dont take antibiotics with alcohol unless you want a stroke etc, just think about it , do the alcohol after to celebrate!1"
dre replied: "Yes it does. It can be harmful for your liver, kidneys, etc. It depends wjhat kind of antibiotics are they. But I am talking about heavy drinking.
the worst thing is medication for your heart and alcohol."
Debbie Fancourt replied: "most deffinately ive been stupid enough to do that.alcohol and tablets of any kind DONT MIX, it is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.yes they will not work properly and you could seriously end up severely ill."
help u replied: "Ive dun it loadsa times. I think your find it just flushes em out ya system quiker.
Ive never been ill from it. People saying they were ill are probably just light weights and would be ill anyway"
mark319438 replied: "Sure does done it loads of time myself.Used to suffer from tonsillitis regularly,But it used to get in the way of my drinkin so i drank away My mum used go mad The Doctor used to go mad " now Mark you no you cant drink on these".Yeah yeah lol.Didn't feel so good when my tonsils nearly closed and i was off work for two weeks. So my advice it does get you pissed easier but you can always get pissed the week after, let the tablets do there job. After missin a weekend drinkin you pissed easier the next week anyway so it all evens out in the end." Erythromycin and Benzoyl Peroxide Topical Gel Question? Ok so the doctor prescribed me this for my acne and theres like this container with a white gel and then there is a seperately a little tube with some sort of white powder. Am i suppose to mix them together? in the directions it says to put ethyl alcohol onto the tube but i am very confused because this didnt even bring ethly alcohol. What do I do? HouseMom replied: "I would call the pharmacy and ask. We used to make these preparations and would mix it ahead of time for the customer, not make them do it themselves. You might have to store it in the fridge afterwards - i seem to remember that we'd always make it at the last minute because it could become unstable. Definitely call them and ask if the directions are unclear; otherwise ethyl alcohol is grain alcohol and you're highly unlikely to have any of that lying around! LOL" ![]() More Links
